 Jacques Cartier
 Jacques Cartier, (born 1491, Saint-Malo, Brittany, France, died Sept. 1, 1557), French mariner who began exploration with the coastline of eastern Canada, He discovered and named the St. Lawrence River. He gave Canada its name. Before that it used to be Kanata, meaning village or settlement.he was to "discover certain islands and lands where it is said that a great quantity of gold and other precious things are to be found". It took him twenty days to sail across the ocean. Starting on May 10 of that year, he explored parts of Newfoundland, the areas now the Canadian Atlantic provinces and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. He had more than 1 voyage.
